Champagne Krug
Recognised as one of the greatest of the Houses of Champagne, Krug was founded in 1843 by Johann Josef Krug, a master blender from Mainz, Germany. Krug is now owned by LVMH but the Krug family supervises every aspect of production.
The average production of this House is 500 000 bottles a year, which is rather low and reveals its highly qualitative approach. Krug is the only House still fermenting its Champagne in small, 205 litres, oak barrels (using only wood from 200-year-old trees). All their Champagnes age for at least 6 years in their cellars.
To produce these top-quality Champagnes, three grape varieties are used: Pinot Noir, deep and intense, Pinot Meunier which adds softness and fruitiness, and Chardonnay which combines finesse and elegance. Krug’s different vintage cuvées are released when they are ready to drink and not necessarily in chronological order.
These Champagnes are rich, delicately flavored and complex. The most patient Champagne lovers will be happy to know that they can be cellared for many years.
